Having a terrain in a prime location, the clients of this project wanted a modern house that would make the most out of the incredible views over the Douro River. The original terrain, although situated in an extraordinary location, had a steep slope towards its edge. On the other hand, towards the street there was also a 3m difference between the extremities of the main façade. Without any pre-existence, it was a project made from scratch.
Taking into account the slope of the topography and the main objective to be achieved, the challenge of this project consisted essentially on the form of its implementation, as well as the strategies required for the earthworks. The guiding principle of the project was clear, to work on a volume in height from the highest level of the land to ensure the best views and to progressively clear the land to avoid exaggerated changes in elevation.
The result is an imposing house with presence, which expresses itself slightly from the top of the land and opens out completely onto the Douro River valley. A project with clear plans that define an interior void, where a sculptural staircase that connects all the floors of the house stands out. On the 1st floor, which coincides with the highest level of the terrain, is where all the communal spaces are located and it is where an infinity pool is also installed that delimits the first containment of the terrain. On the lower floor, which conveniently corresponds to the lower level of the street, is created the access to the car park and it is where the gym is located. Finally, on the top floor, the office and bedrooms enjoy the best panoramic views at the top of the house.
