SHARE PROJECT
PROCESS
The client of this project showed us an exciting vision for the elongated and narrow “Island” type plot, on which he imagined a local accommodation program. They intended to optimise the capacity for receiving guests, with the construction of 6 accommodation units, and to guarantee a quality service, providing spacious and ventilated spaces with good natural light.
The site had a number of pre-existing buildings, designated in the land register as huts, which were abandoned but in good structural condition. On the other hand, the plot is bordered by neighbouring buildings on both longitudinal boundaries, with a tall 6-storey building to the south-east and another building to the north-west, which is part of the same ‘island’ typology.
The strategy of the proposal was based on the reinterpretation of this traditional Portuguese typology, seeking to make the best use of both the construction volume and the qualities of the space, in a contemporary and refreshing style. Aware of how narrow the terrain was, a lining of vegetation was removed from the continuous wall with the neighbouring “island”, visually decongesting the access space to the structures.
The proposed chain of volumes integrates with affinity in its urban context, respecting the alignments of its typological sister and modernising the traditional shapes.
